Japanese Women and Bigaku :: Questionnaire!

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 16, 2008, 1:26 PM
Hi there everyone!

As those of you who watch me will already know, three of my classmates and I have received a grant to do formal research on Japanese women and Bigaku (the idea of beauty) in traditional and popular Japanese art and culture. As part of this project, we are researching a number of different anime and manga series that explore a number of different female stereotypes as well as those that have completely unique female characters and situations.

Here's where you come in--

To help us in our search of unique characters, we would appreciate if you would fill out this questionnaire for us. In addition to enlightening us to characters we may have overlooked, the information gathered by these questionnaires will help us to decide which anime directors and manga-ka we would like to interview when we go abroad to Japan to complete our research.

Hmmm... I'll help out, although you won't be getting much from me as far as female characters go.

Genkaku-kun

I enjoy reading Naruto (Kishimoto Masashi), D. Gray Man (Katsura Hoshino), and Death Note (Takeshi Obata).

Characters;
a) Uchiha Itachi (Naruto) is the incarnation of awesome. Cool, calculating, and still more capable than any other character.
b) Allen Walker (D. Gray Man). I really just read D. Gray Man for the art, and Allen's design has the most appeal.
c) Matt (Death Note). Best Character Design In The Series, despite his being in, what, 8 panels or so.

Female characters; actually, not particularly. I really only read shonen manga, so...
No one knew whether Deidara (Naruto) was female or not and he was one of my favorites, but he turned out to be a boy.
It's always bothered e that all of the manga I read have the same stereotypes, particularly concerning girls. I'm really tired of them being useless, only to cry and resolve to get stronger so that the boys don't have to defend them, only to remain worthless.

I. My three favourite manga/anime:
1)DOGS bullets and carnage (Shirow Niwa)
2)Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! (GAINAX)
3)Samurai Champloo (erh.. forgot)

favourite chars:
1. Kamina from TTGL, since he is the most epic man in the universe (total understatement) and is the first character I ever cried for ;___; his outfit is also the bomb.
2.Ogihci Ikasoruk (or Hichigo) from Bleach, because he makes a hot badass evil character :D gotta love crazy ass alter egos of chars. in the anime, his voice is also kickass~~ *fangirl swoon*
3. Mugen from Samurai Champloo, because he is super hot (im shallow like that LOL) and his design is really original. I love it when they are good fighers as well ~

III. Female characters.. kind of rare for me to like a female cartoon char. I guess I'd say Yoko from TTGL, since she isnt the princess you have to rescue from the castle and is really badass :heart

I. What are your three favorite anime/manga? If you know the authors or directors, please list their name, as well.
1) Last Exile (Director: Koichi Chigira)
2) Blame! (Author: Tsutomu Nihei)
3) Haibane Renmei (Director: Tomokazu Tokoro)

II. Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?
1) Alvis Hamilton. Plain and simple, she's super cute. She's only eleven years old. There's also Sophia Forrester. She's vice-captain of the ship, so she's a very strong character. But she isn't all walls-up, "I'm never going to reveal anything to anyone", either.
2) Characters are somewhat minor in this manga, so I can't say I have favourites.
3) Reki. She's a mother figure to the other characters, but she's quite mysterious. She doesn't remember her "cocoon dream" as the others do, and is "troubled by her past... and by nightmares".

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.
1) As I mentioned, Sophia Forrester. She isn't cliché; she's in a position of "empowerment", not power, she's strong but not frustratingly so.
2) Cibo is the head scientist of the big "Corporation" in this manga, and joins up with the main character to find the Net Terminal Gene. She inhabits the decaying body of a woman kept alive by machinery. She has serious hacking skills. That said, she isn't like techy girls/women I've seen in other anime/manga. She doesn't have to make up for being "techy" with large breasts.
3) Reki. Refer to II.

Hope that helps! Your research sounds exciting, and I wish you well in Japan.

I. What are your three favorite anime/manga? If you know the authors or directors, please list their name, as well.
1)Evangelion
2)Death Note
3)Gankutsuou

II. Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?

1.
Name: Light Yagami
Descriptions: a very well made character, very good lying and having this secret life so successfully through a lot of time. Is a character that changes with time, but is still the same in escence.

2.
Name: Misato Katsuragi
Descriptions: I really like this character, is very funny but at the same time it has a deep importance in the story, somehow has gone through a lot of things but however find a way to live relaxed when she can.

3.
Name: Konata Izumi from Lucky star
Descriptions: is a very cool character, I think she is Lucky star somehow, she doesn't make things really from other world but is funny anyway, is like she show you how you are somehow if you like anime or videogames.

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.

I think there are a lot, like Suzumiya Haruhi's girls for example, every girl is pretty different but interesting in their ways. Haruhi is very weird and being like the boss of others in crazy ideas. Mikuru is like very cute and sometimes abused by haruhi and that's very funny. Lucky star is very good example of how female chracters can make a very good story.

1)Bleach (Tite Kubo)
2)xxxHolic (CLAMP)
3)Air Gear (Oh!Great)

1. Ulquiorra Schiffer because he looks cool, acts cool and an easy target for strange nicknames. Really, I almost only like him for his permanent emo tears.

2. Watanuki Kimihiro because he changes a great deal as the story progresses. At first, he's kind of annoying and retarded but he becomes wiser and kinder to random strangers (or something like that haha). And besides, he's such a loser sometimes , it makes me want to laugh.

3. Noyamano Ringo because she's strong. She's not the main character or the main antagonist but she can kick the main character's ass. Which is awesome. I think she's a well developed character because she has a distinct personality that sets her apart from the others. And it's usually her that saves the main character and his buddies from utter defeat (in the beginning but then she completely and utterly owns him later)

III. Female characters: Yuuko from xxxHolic. She's really mysterious and you know almost nothing about her background. She owns a shop that grants wishes but for a price (which is never money). Although she's mysterious, she also has an easygoing personality. She likes to drink alcohol and have a good time. She always bosses Watanuki around (because he's her indentured servant) and makes fun of him all the time. I'm not really sure why I like her, but I guess I like her because she's eccentric.

1.
Name: Urahara Kisuke
Descriptions: Great personality, very funny and eccentric. Serious when he needs to be plus his look is awesome! <33 the hat n clogs ^^

2.
Name: Kakashi Hatake
Descriptions: He's so funny and a great sensei. I love it when he gets all protective too. His design owns.

3.
Name: L
Descriptions: Hilarious, adorable, always eating haha. Completely brilliant and sweet, I was SO beyond sad when he died ; ; ; ;

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.

Hinata is very interesting from Naruto...she possesses a deadly fighting style yet is quiet as a mouse and very introverted. When she gains confidence in herself I love her even more :).
Yoruichi from Bleach is also very interesting, I love how she freaks ichigo out and is a funny person yet a deadly fighter. Her relationship with Soi Fon is interesting too
Every single girl from Lucky Star is absolutely adorable and interesting <3 especially Konota
Tatsuki (Bleach) is the typical tomboyish girl from Bleach. Love it when her protective complex kicks in or when she hits the guys XD
Rukia (Bleach) is really sweet, caring yet very protective and strong. She's not a weak-ass scaredy cat either which is refreshing.
Winry (FMA) totally defeats the girly girl stereotype cause shes a mechanic! Who throws wrenches at Ed n Al! Nuff said

A lot of the other girls are stereotypically weak and/or boy-obsessed which really sucks. I can't stand the "I'll do my best!" girls x.x The girls in Death Note are some of the most irritating around....as much as I love that series..

I. “What are your three favorite anime/manga?” Wow, tough question because I have sooo many that I love…
1) Saiunkoku Monogatari (Anime Director: Jun Shishido, Light Novel Author: Sai Yukino, Manga-ka: Kairi Yura)

2) Inuyasha (Manga-ka: Rumiko Takahashi)

3) Last Exile (Director: Koichi Chigira)

II. “Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?”

1.
Name: Basically all of them, but Kou Shuurei, Shi Seiran, Shi Ryuuki, Li Kouyuu, Ran Shuuei, To Eigetsu, and Rou Ensei are my favorites out of all of them. (Out of these listed, only Kou Shuurei is female.)

Descriptions: Really, each of the characters have their own quirks and personalities that makes the “good guys” (most of which ARE guys) very easy to like. Shuurei is a very strong female character, though, who doesn’t let insurmountable obstacles stand in the way of her dreams. And all of the guys are sweet in their own ways, although I find Li Kouyuu the most amusing out of the lot with his bad temper and equally bad sense of direction.

2.
Name: Again, I like most of the main characters, but Inuyasha and Kagome have a special place in my heart. Sesshomaru and Rin get their own place too. *grin*

Descriptions: I really like the interplay and relationships between the characters. For Kagome, even though sometimes she is kinda helpless, she does try her best and shows a lot of spunk. Plus, she is very kindhearted, helping Kikyo even after the priestess tried to kill her. Inuyasha amuses me because he’s so brash and yet can be so sweet. Plus, he’s fighting against heavy odds to find his place in the world, and I like rooting for the underdog. (Hah, no pun intended.) I wasn’t sure if I liked Sesshomaru at first, but after a while, especially after Rin entered the picture, he grew on me. I want to see if/how Rin can melt some of that icy exterior.

3.
Name: Alex Row, hands down.

Descriptions: Last Exile was the first anime I ever watched, so it sort of set a precedent for me in terms of what I look for in anime and manga. Alex Row is the original example of what I call the “tortured soul” character. He has a dark and sorrowful past that you find out about bit by bit and you get to see how it has changed and shaped his personality. Characters like that, especially the male ones, always draw me in and make me interested, primarily because I want to help them feel better or find a happy ending in their story. Alex Row is very mysterious, but loyal and almost frightingly intelligent, capable of getting his people out of situations that would have swamped lesser men. Plus, he has a good voice, courtesy of Crispin Freemen.

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.

In Saiunkoku Monogatari, since it’s a reverse harem, there aren’t that many female characters, but the ones that do appear are very strong. They have definite goals and can deal with tough situations with both cunning and grace, and they aren’t willing to take any nonsense from the men. Kou Shuurei, Kourin, Mistress Kochou, and Lady Hyou Eiki are all good examples of this with their strong wills and often fiery tempers.

In Inuyasha, the female characters are also strong, but they have their moments of feminine weakness and need as well. The prime examples I can think of are Kagome and Sango. They both have to deal with thick-skulled males who they ended up falling in love with. Seeing how they deal with that as well as the dangers they have to face searching for the Shikon Jewel are both entertaining and heartwarming…as well as occasionally heartbreaking.

In Last Exile, I think the most interesting female characters are Sophie Forrester, Alvis Hamilton, and Maestro Delphine Eraclea. Sophie walks the line between an excellent vice-captain in a position of authority and respect, but also serves as a mother-like figure for not only Alvis, but for the crew as well. She’s definitely a capable and trusted officer, but she’s not heartless and can show her softer side without losing face. Alvis is just really cute and innocent, absolutely adorable as she finds a new family and a new home with Klaus and Lavi on the Silvana. The Maestro, while being an evil creature, is also interesting, simply by how cruel and uncaring she is. She’s like a spoiled child, but one on who’s whim your life depends. I sure don’t like her, but you can’t deny that she is powerful.

I hope this helped! Good luck with your research and have fun on your trip!

I. What are your three favorite anime/manga? If you know the authors or directors, please list their name, as well.
1) Naruto (Masashi Kishimoto)
2) Bleach (Kubo Tite)
3) Gankutsuo (Gonzo)

II. Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?

1.
Name: Akasuna no Sasori
Descriptions: He's a puppet master ninja in Naruto. I was fascinated by his character because of his desire for immortality and his morbid works of turning living people into puppets. I also liked the fact that he had a tragic past that he seemed to try to escape. He even turned himself into a puppet in an attempt to make himself the ultimate weapon along with ridding himself of his emotions.

2.
Name: Ichimaru Gin
Descriptions: There is so much mystery around this character. He is from Bleach. He smiles all the time and seems to almost have his own agenda. He's a bit of an evil kitsune. Though his relationship with one of the female characters really intrigues me. Not much has been revealed about them in details, but there is something sad there that attracts me.

3.
Name: Tobi
Descriptions: Another Naruto character, I find him mysterious, evil, and yet extremely amusing. He has a quirky personality, and we have only got to see glimpses of his face since he wears it behind a mask. The mystery is what truly pulls me to him.

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.

I rarely if ever become interested in female characters. I suppose I'd have to say Matsumoto Rangiku (Bleach) because of her relationship with Ichimaru Gin. She's part of the mystery so I find her interesting because she can help me learn more about the character I like. :)

I. What are your three favorite anime/manga? If you know the authors or directors, please list their name, as well.
1) Wolf's Rain (both manga and anime) by Bones/Keiko Nobumoto (anime) and Toshitugu Iida
2) Pon! To Kimaira (manga) by Asano Rin
3) Bleach (manga) by Kubotite

II. Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?
1.
Name: Shian (from Pon! To Kimaira)
Descriptions: Red haired lady from the "land of the sky". Very womanly bossy attitude, which comes with attractiveness and love for cute things (especially her "child"). She's the middle oddball of the family, taking care of both her ditzy older sister, hyper younger sister, and penguin-suited bald and scarred crazy father.

2.
Name: Hige (from Wolf's Rain)
Descriptions: The humor of that depressing anime/manga. He's funny and bright and yellow, also loves food. Even when things are bad he seems to be the one trying to get everyone to cheer up and smile a little.

3.
Name: Igano Kabamaru (from... Igano Kabamaru)
Descriptions: Probably one of the original "dumb ass" ninjas ever. Dumb ass in funny in an idiotic way. He eats a lot and drools at everything and never seems to stop eating... which reminds me of Dragonball, and a lot of other characters whose stomachs are endless vortexes. He's supposed to go to school (which is a big change from living in the mountains, trained by his grandfather to be a ninja) and get married to this girl in his classes (which was an arranged marriage), who completely hates him because he's such an embarassment! But he remains cool and loyal to the arrangement, because he really does have feelings for her.

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.
-Shian... because I think she has a very original personality.
-Soi Fong... her story between Yoruichi was interesting and reminded me of my own friendship. Even though she became bitter, she was still the subordinate of Yoruichi at heart.
-Cheza... Never knew she was blind until I read the manga. I think it's interesting that she was "created from a flower", yet still imperfect. She seems so helpless and a little ditzy, but there were times where she made her mark.

I. What are your three favorite anime/manga? If you know the authors or directors, please list their name, as well.
1) Bleach - Kubo Tite
2) InuYasha - Rumiko Takahashi
3) I... don't think I really have a third. D:

II. Who are your favorite characters, and why do you like them?

1.
Name: Urahara Kisuke
Descriptions: A shady business owner who helps out the main characters of the story, but he's got his own deep dark secret past. He's very intelligent but comes off as a rather goofy and silly character. He dresses in very casual clothing and wears a striped hat.

2.
Name: Sesshoumaru
Descriptions: A very up-tight, egocentric, refers to himself in third person, dog-demon lord. He is the older brother to the main male protagonist. He wears fancy Japanese clothing and demon armor and carries a large fluffy thing on his shoulder. A little toad-looking demon and a small human child follows him (ironically enough, considering he hates humans).

III. Are there any interesting female characters? If so, please list the character(s) and what about them that makes them interesting.

In Bleach, there's a character named Matsumoto Rangiku, who, upon first glance, is this bimbo strawberry blonde with large breasts. She looks like your ideal barbie, I guess. But she holds her own weight in fights and she's a tough cookie and I like that she's more than just your stereotypical big-boobed bimbo girl. She loves to shop, she has long flowy blonde hair, big breasts, a beauty mark, and all the guys love her, but she's got depth to her character and I like that she's not some helpless damsel in distress.
